Methoni as we see it today is a place that developed outside the walls of the castle with the creation of the Greek state after the liberation of 1821. Before that, its main city was within the walls. Here one of the first urban and street plans of Greece was created. The visitor can easily see this evolution with a simple walk starting from the castle gate towards the interior of the village. The area on land, at sea and on the opposite islands is full of historical monuments from ancient times to the last century.
