Huge Blockbuster in Messinia

Filming for Christopher Nolan's highly anticipated blockbuster “Odyssey” will soon take place in Messinia, with one of the most pivotal scenes set to unfold at the historic and visually stunning Venetian Castle of Methoni. This coastal fortress, rich in history and dramatic beauty, will serve as the backdrop for several key moments in the epic film, adding depth and grandeur to its narrative. As filming approaches, the fortified walls of the castle are preparing to transform into the center of cinematic action, bringing an extra layer of magic to the already legendary structure.
The entire region of Pylos is buzzing with excitement as the production gears up, and local hotels are seeing a surge of visitors eager to be part of the spectacle. In fact, the arrival of the film’s unique five-hulled ship — a replica of an ancient Greek galley — has already caught the attention of many. Built in Norway, the ship was transported to Katakolo, assembled, and then delivered by sea to Pylos. This vessel, which closely mirrors the one used by Odysseus in Homer’s Odyssey, promises to be a striking visual element of the film.
Christopher Nolan, the Oscar-winning director, visited the area some time ago to take in the breathtaking natural landscapes, and carefully chose the perfect locations for filming. With all necessary permits secured and strict protection measures in place, the production team is ensuring minimal disruption to the area, even going so far as to transport most of the equipment via helicopter to avoid congestion on the narrow streets.
While official announcements regarding the cast are yet to be made, there has been much speculation that big-name actors such as Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Tom Holland, and Charlize Theron are set to star in the film, further fueling excitement surrounding the production.
The filming schedule is as follows:
Methoni: March 11-12, 2025 — The Castle of Methoni and the nearby Church of the Transfiguration of the Savior will be transformed into the film’s set. Preparations will run from February 17 to March 9, 2025.
Nestor's Cave & Voidokilia Beach: March 13-20, 2025 — Key scenes involving Cyclops Polyphemus will be filmed at these iconic locations. A large mechanical effigy of the Cyclops will be created within Nestor’s Cave, with special care taken to protect the delicate environment.
Almyrolakka Beach: March 21, 2025 — A dramatic night scene will be filmed, including the construction of a temporary village made from eco-friendly materials and enhanced with special fire effects controlled by certified pyrotechnicians.
Acrocorinth: This historically rich location will also be featured in the film, with the production receiving special permission from the Greek Ministry of Culture.
In total, filming will take place from 10-25 of March, 2025, and will involve around 350 crew members, actors, and a fleet of 100-150 vehicles. The success of the project is greatly attributed to Faliro House Productions, led by Christos V. Konstantakopoulos, whose contribution has been instrumental in bringing major international productions to Greece. With such rich cultural landmarks as its backdrop, Nolan’s “Odyssey” promises to be a visual and storytelling triumph.
